Every year nearly 3,000 United States citizens are striken by this disease. The time from exposure until the patient falls ill is 20 to 30 years. More and more citizens in this country will be concerned by mesothelomia.

The people threaten by mesothelomia have worked in factories, in mines.. and they were exposed to asbestos. They ignored that, while they were working, they were slowly killing themselves, inhaling the particles of dust as the asbestos degrades, eating away at the lining of your lungs and developing into a deadly cancer.

The effects of asbestos on the human body were known to be deadly for years by the companies who employed the inflicted workers and made profit off of their backs. But instead of taking measures to alleviate the problem and save lives they choose to do nothing and continue to make profit.

Mesothelomia and asbestos

Asbestos has been use for centuries, for different things, be it insulation, structure, ceilings, car industry... Asbestos was fireproof, therefore it was considered to be "safe" in that peculiar sense.

Though risks have been observed while working with and using asbestos, they were not taken into account and asbestos was widely used.

In the middle of 1920s in England a physician found traces of fibres and dust in the man’s lungs. The patient had worked with asbestos for years. The link bestween asbestos exposure and deadly threat began to emerge. 25% of English asbestos workers showed signs of a related lung disease.

In England the law was adapted to this statement requiring industrials to provide better ventilation and more protection to workers who were regularly exposed to asbestos.

Companies were now aware of the risks but continued to use asbestos widely in the 1970s.

Today, many new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed every year. The number of cases is increasing very quickly.

What is mesothelioma ?

The people mostly threaten by mesothelomia have worked with asbestos over the past thirty to fifty years. Men between the ages of sixty and seventy are mainly concerned, but also those who have had regular contact with a person who has worked with asbestos.
The workers who were exposed to asbestos regularly carried dust and fibres on their clothes, skin and in their hair and the fibres and dust could be ingested by family members, who were then at risk of also developing mesothelioma, respiratory problems or another asbestos related disease.

The organs most affected by mesothelioma are the lungs and the surrounding tissue.

The most common type of mesothelioma is the pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs. Symptoms are breathing and swallowing difficulties, coughing, shortness of breath, fever and weight loss.

Another type of mesothelioma is the peritoneal mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma is not as common as pleural mesothelioma. Symptoms are nausea and vomiting, weight loss and loss of appetite, fever, bowel obstruction and pain or swelling of the stomach area.

The third type of mesothelioma, more rare, is the pericardial mesothelioma which affects the heart and the tissue surrounding it. Symptoms can include palpitations, breathing difficulties, and persistent coughing.

Because symptoms of mesothelioma are very common to loads of other diseases, many people got away with this for years. People who have worked with asbestos should always let their doctor know this:  a speedy diagnosis is important to the effective treatment of mesothelioma. The faster the mesothelioma is diagnosed and treated, the more chance of success, which is why it is important to get as fast a diagnosis as possible.

The treatments for mesothelioma include surgery, radiation therapy, palliative therapy and chemotherapy
